The Yard Since the foundation of the company in 1966, almost 2.000 Swans yachts have been produced, ranging from 36 to 131 feet and almost all of them still in use. The little yard built by Pekka Koskenkyla in Pietarsaari where he produced the first fibre glass “Swan 36”, has now developed into three main modern production facilities, employing more than 400 direct staff and almost a similar number of indirect staff, when including specialists, subcontractors and consultants. Today the historical plant in Kallby is dedicated to the lamination of all Swans’ hulls, using one of the most advanced and fully computerized milling machine to perfectly shape the moulds. Another part of the plant is dedicated to the assembly of the smaller size yachts from “Swan 42” to the latest “Swan 60”. The Kallby plant also includes an “in-door” water facility to test the yachts prior to the delivery, also in the cold winter months. In 2002, a new yard, close to the sea, has been opened in Pietarsaari, as a result of a long-standing collaboration between the Company and the City of Pietarsaari, with the vision of building a hi-tech boatyard, supported by the most advanced technology to be capable of assembling large yachts. The new yard is in fact entirely dedicated to the assembly of the “Maxi Swan Yachts”, from “Swan 66” to “Swan 82”, from “Swan 90” to “Swan 100” and over. The plant includes a large and private marina, ideal to commission and test all the new yachts. The third plant is in Kronoby and it is where expert carpenters are dedicated to the hand-made preparation of the magnificent wood interiors, which have become a feature of all Swans yachts. The level of detail is such that a sample of the wood of each yacht is kept at the factory, so that an exact replacement could be made if required. Like in the old times, the most important asset in building a Swan yacht today remains the teams of boat builders, with the inherited know-how from fathers and grandfathers. They are spending paint-staking hours crafting each section of the yachts and marvellously interpreting the projects developed by “Frers Naval Architecture and Engineering”, supported by a team of over 50 in-house designers and engineers of Nautor’s Swan Product Development and Technical Office departments. It is thanks to these manufacturing facilities and the expert craftsmen that Nautor’s Swan continue to be a leader in the luxury yacht market and is globally recognised as the producer of exquisitely crafted yachts, capable of offering the perfect balance of style and performance, ideal for both high performance racing and relaxed, luxurious cruising. The perfectly shaped hulls, the strong and resistant structures, the clean deck with invisible manoeuvres, the installation of state of the art equipments are some of the elements which in the hands of Nautor’s craftsmen in Finland make Swan yachts fast and easy to handle, sailing in complete safety even with a small crew. 12 13 |
